Super Bowl Sunday, Robins, Squirrels and Bears; Oh My!

This morning around eight o'clock I heard a choir of birds chirping out in my yard. Looking out, I saw that we were in the beginning stages of our (Florida's) annual migration of robins. They were everywhere but on the bird feeder I bought and filled almost four months ago. Having grown up in New England, we always had bird feeders in the yard, so when I moved into a new house here in Florida in September, I decided that I should put a bird feeder on the branch of a big oak tree in the side yard. It seemed like a natural location, so I bought one and filled it with seed.

Four plus months later, my feeder is still full. There's birds everywhere, but for some reason they don't go to the feeder. I keep a large tray of water below the feeder, which the birds drink from, but they don't seem to have any interest in the seed hanging directly over their head. I've tried everything; I placed a small plastic table out in the yard close to the trees, filled the top with bird seed, and still nothing. Two very fat squirrels were the only visitors to my table, so I put the table back in my porch and gave up.

You can imagine when I looked out this morning to see about 50-60 robins around the house, with a blue jay and a cardinal also present, but not one bird near the feeder, I began to get a little ticked off. I went out to the feeder, opened it and spread about half of the seed on the ground around the tray of water so the robins would eat it. I looked out 10 minutes later expecting to see the birds enjoying the "Deluxe Songbird Mix." What I saw instead was a (you guessed it) fat squirrel having a hell of a time eating all the good stuff while the robins hopped around in the grass. Do any of you know what the market is for a "Never Been Used" bird feeder? Craigslist maybe?

Let's talk about Super Bowl Sunday. Millions of people will sit in front of TV's across the world and breathlessly await the outcome of the contest. Some will really get excited, and others will just take a mild interest, but you can take it to the bank; they won't miss a minute of the commercials (you probably thought I was talking about the game, didn't you?). They'll sit there just like you and me and score the commercials one by one until the end of the game. Whether the score is 52-0 or 17-13, it won't matter to most of us; the water cooler talk of the day on Monday will be about the best ads.

Let's face it; there's a reason why ticket sales for the secondary suppliers have been really slow, and in many cases, have gone down considerably as the day draws closer. How many of the millions of us on the East Coast (where much of the market is) want to go to a Super Bowl game in New Jersey? In February? Especially when the two teams involved are West Coast teams (I know Denver isn't on the coast, but you get the drift). I spoke to someone in New Jersey yesterday and she proudly proclaimed that it might be around forty degrees on Sunday. That should change the minds of those casual fans who really wanted to go someplace warm to watch the game. Throw off your layers of clothes, football fans; it's going to be forty!

As to the game, I'm picking the Broncos, not so much because I like them, but out of respect to Peyton Manning. I'm a Patriots/Tom Brady fan, and I know they just knocked us out in the Conference Championship, but Peyton Manning is the ultimate class guy. When you look at the way he handles himself each and every time he's in front of a camera and microphone, you can't help but give him his due. He had an incredible year and deserves the MVP; good luck to him and his fellow Broncos teammates! And, Pete Carroll, you need to teach some of your players to grow up to be just as professional as Mr. Manning. Sports would be better for it!

BTW, does anyone know the line on Volkswagen vs. Go Daddy?

Are you addicted to SM? No, not that Freudian stuff, the more current version. You all know what I'm talking about; most of you find my blog through Social Media. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google +, YouTube, Pinterest; the list goes on, with no signs of slowing down.

Rumors of a decline in Facebook usage has me puzzled. I don't see a shortage of Facebook posters; to the contrary, I see more and more people spending their time wandering the pages of this site. What I do see is a change in the demographics of Facebook. When I first started looking at Facebook, which honestly wasn't often, I often felt it's content wasn't necessarily what I was interested in.

A great deal of the posters seemed to be young, mostly high school and college students and twenty-somethings, certainly not a bad thing. But it didn't seem like a place that a Baby Boomer like myself would spend a lot of time on, so I devoted more time to LinkedIn, a business site more tuned in to what I wanted to know about. I soon found out that's not the case today; the average age of the posters has probably gone up into the 40's and 50's. It's not the kid's place anymore, in fact, most young adults don't post much there. It's become the highway for the Boomers and their families, which prompted me to check it out more often.

But now I have officially become a Facebook junkie; it's true, I have! I'm not sure when it happened, but it did, and I have to LMAO because of it! I now open the day with a visit to Facebook, and then I keep the window open all day until I go to bed at night. I probably check to see what's going on at least ten times a day; it's probably more, but I don't really want to know. But I know I'm not alone.

There are so many friends and family members who spend as much time as me browsing the pages, and I'm guessing by their quick likes and comments that they spend as much time as I do refreshing the Home page to see if there's something new. It's crazy! Here's the hook for me; I have reconnected with so many people from my past on this site and I've made so many new friends that not browsing through it makes me feel like one of them might have posted something that I'd miss if I didn't check in.

I now look forward to the videos and cartoons scattered throughout my timeline. It was just a few months ago that I didn't even know how to share something, and I rarely commented on any of the posts I read. Now I find myself commenting on all sorts of things, and sharing things that I think are funny or worthy of passing along. I've even started to copy recipes that look good; I whipped up a Shrimp Mozambique a few nights ago, and last night I put together an applesauce bread that was a great accompaniment to a Faux Chicken Pot Pie I made (faux meaning I didn't bother to make a crust, just the ingredients).

It was just a couple years ago that I didn't even know what LOL was. I'd see this in emails and text messages, and thought it might mean "lots of love" (I'm a romantic at heart), but when it started appearing in messages from guys, I decided it was time I updated my linguistic files to include the SM abbreviations. I still get a little confused, but I'm learning.

So here's to all my family and friends, both old and new, that spend so much time on Facebook. When you find out how to curtail your addiction, please let me know! Maybe there's an SMA (Social Media Addiction) group somewhere that can help us all, or maybe there's an ongoing group on Facebook we could all join!

Until then, it's LOL (lots of love)!
